Throughout its more than 240 year history, America has been both a good citizen of the world and a bad one. America has fought for human rights, political freedom and democracy in the world but has also acted to expand its own power in selfish ways. When America has fought foreign wars, were its motives selfish or humanitarian? Consider the complexities of overseas commitments such as the Philippine annexation long ago, or Vietnam and Iraq more recently. What was America doing there? What were the lessons Americans gained?
